One person is dead and one man is in custody after an early morning shooting Wednesday near downtown Nanaimo.

According to Nanaimo RCMP, officers responded to a report of shots fired at the Howard Johnson Harbourside Hotel at 1 Terminal Ave. at about 3:20 a.m.

When officers arrived, they found one person deceased in the lobby of the hotel from apparent gun shot wounds.

Approximately one hour later, a vehicle was stopped by North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP officers and one man was taken into custody without incident.

The Nanaimo RCMP Serious Crime Unit assisted by RCMP forensics and plain clothes units are continuing with their investigation.

“At this time, this appears to be a targeted shooting and investigators do not believe there is any risk to the public,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, in a press release.

Dan Brady, hotel general manager, could only give minimal comment on the incident Wednesday morning.

“I can’t really comment right now, due to the ongoing RCMP investigation and due to the privacy of the guest that was shot,” Brady said.

The B.C. Coroners Service has been advised and the investigation is continuing.
