The soil landfill above Shawnigan Lake was the subject of numerous rallies and protests in the community.

The Cowichan Valley Regional District is hitting the road over the next week speaking to residents about a “significant” increase in the volume of soil deposits that are being transported and dumped on various properties in the district.

“The CVRD is aware of the impact this activity is having in many of our rural communities and the Board is considering the establishment of a soil deposit bylaw in order to manage and mitigate the impacts of this increasing activity,” said a memo posted on the region’s website.

Open houses started on Saturday at the Duncan Farmers’ Market and one is being held this Thursday night at the North Oyster Community Centre from 5-7 p.m. An industry focused event open to the public is also scheduled for Wednesday in the CVRD board from from 1-3 p.m.

The public forums are an opportunity to gather input regarding the development of the bylaw and provide opportunities for anyone wishing to gain a better understanding of the issues, review materials and provide input to CVRD staff.

A description of the topic and a summary of key elements being considered for inclusion in a soil deposit bylaw are available at www.placespeak.com or www.cvrd.bc.ca/soil. Comments can be submitted on our PlaceSpeak page, email or at the open houses.
