A fugitive truck driver and former Ladysmith resident who allegedly fled the country to South America for three years is now behind bars and awaiting his next court date later in May.

Randolf Enns was arrested at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Nov. 17, 2016 as he arrived back in Canada, Manitoba RCMP confirmed to the Chronicle.

A day later officers from the RCMP’s Court Liaison Unit travelled to Toronto and executed a warrant for his arrest.

“The reason for his trip is unknown but information had been received from our Interpol policing partners that he had made arrangements to return back to Canada,” said Sgt. Paul Manaigre.

In July 2013, 20-year-old Derek Bossuyt was driving his pickup truck eastbound on the Trans-Canada Highway west of Winnipeg when a semi truck crossed over the centre line allegedly causing a collision, said RCMP.

The young man was pronounced dead at the scene and Enns, then 34 years old, was charged in the fatal crash.

According to the Winnipeg Free Press, Enns failed to show up to his trial in October 2014 after being released on bail. A Canada-wide warrant was subsequently issued for his arrest.

Enns was rumoured to be living in South America where he has dual citizenship in Paraguay. He also has past ties to the Edmonton area.

The Free Press reported that former Ladysmith man’s defence lawyer has ordered a “not criminally responsible report” to determine his mental state back when the crash occurred.

The results are expected back by the next court appearance in Winnipeg on May, 30.

Enns is facing charges in Winnipeg of Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle Causing Death, Criminal Negligence Causing Death, Resisting Arrest, 2 counts of Failing to Appear in Court, and three counts of Breaching an Undertaking.
