If you venture into the woods in Ladysmith right now you might be in for a ‘big’ surprise.

As is the season, black bears have been spotted in the backyards of many homes in town as well as the surrounding area near Saltair.

Chronicle readers Don and Susan Mercer sent us this photo of a bear in the backyard of their home on Roland Road.

The town is reminding residents to be ‘bear aware’ as the animals come out of hibernation and search for food sources.

Please be aware that it is the season bears are coming out of hibernation and are searching for food sources.

Garbage is an attractant to bears so keep garbage contained until pick up day.

Also, keep pets on a leash and children close to you. Never approach or feed the bears or other animals.

If you see a bear please call the conservation office 1-877-952-7277 or the town’s parks supervision at 250-245-6448.
