Chemainus murder case back in court next week

A Chemainus man charged with second degree murder will be back in court for a preliminary hearing on March 28.

Derek Descoteau, 20, was allegedly stabbed to death at a home on Caswell Street in Chemainus and died while being rushed to hospital.

The accused Colin John was arrested at the scene and has been in custody ever since.

A judge will decide at Tuesday’s preliminary inquiry if there is sufficient evidence for John to stand trial.

He is also facing a charge of attempted murder stemming from the same incident in which a 16-year-old girl was alsoinjured.

The Cowichan Valley teen suffered knife wounds to her neck and was treated in hospital as a result of the attack.
