The Cowichan Valley Regional District’s dog regulation bylaw hasn’t been reviewed in a decade and amendments are being proposed to ensure public safety.

The CVRD is hosting a number of public consultation events throughout the region this week to compile feedback.

A key element being considered in the new bylaw is the issue of public safety and the need to address aggressive dog incidents by placing the focus on the dog owner to control and prevent incidents.

Regulations for kennels, breeders and dog rescues will also be weighed to enhance the CVRD’s control over

animal issues in the

electoral areas.

For dogs involved in a serious incident proposed restrictions could include:

- Leash and muzzle

in public

- Controlled by a competent person

- Micro chipping

- Training

- Containment and signs

- Spay / neuter

Staff have reviewed several dog regulation bylaws from other municipalities such as Calgary, Vancouver and New Westminster to determine best practices.

The BCSPCA is also closely involved in the process.

Overall, these events are intended to seek input and ideas from the public on the topic of dog regulations and provide an opportunity for the public to learn more about the potential amendments

Sessions were held in Duncan, Lake Cowichan already this week and another is scheduled for today at North Oyster Community Centre, 13467 Cedar Rd in Ladysmith from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Another session is scheduled for Thursday, May 18. at Shawnigan Lake Community Centre, 2804 Shawnigan Lake Road from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.

A description of the topics and a summary of key elements being considered for inclusion in the dog regulation bylaw are available at www.placespeak.com or www.cvrd.bc.ca/dogs. Comments can be submitted on PlaceSpeak, email or at the open houses.
