Soon-to-be former Ladysmith mayor Rob Hutchins has joined the Kids First team.

Hutchins, is pursuing a seat on the Cowichan Valley Board of Education after stepping away from the mayor’s chair he held for 21 years.

The recently retired long-term teacher added his name to the now seven-person slate advocating improved graduation and transition rates, following the School Act, Aboriginal Education, special needs support, early learning and earlier intervention for children needing literacy assistance.

Independent from the Kids First joint platform, Hutchins wants to get new Cowichan Secondary and Lake Cowichan Elementary Schools built, reduce the number of ‘vulnerable’ kids entering the school system and examine the possibility of changing school district boundaries to match those of the regional district.
