The Kinsmen are hoping to boost participation levels in the annual Ladysmith Days parade following dwindling numbers in recent years.

“It’s the kickoff to the town’s summer party and it gives you an opportunity to have a lot of fun with your group and friends,” said Kinsmen spokesperson Duck Paterson.

Members have visited parades in Nanaimo, Chemainus and Lake Cowichan handing out entry forms in the hopes of peaking interest from area groups.

In addition, 100 entry forms have mailed out as is done every year.

This year’s parade also has a Canada 150 theme for anyone interested in decorating a float/vehicle or simply dressing up in red and white.

Judges are picked from the crowd on the street to award ribbons to the best entries.

“We want the participants to have as much fun as the people that are watching,” Paterson said.

Last year there were 27 entries and organizers would ideally like to see closer to 40.

If numbers keep dropping the Kinsmen may reevaluate in the future.

“It’s a fair amount of work…and if it’s not going to be received maybe (we) put our energy into something else for Ladysmith Days,” Paterson said.

The parade starts at 10:15 a.m. on Aug. 5. Entry forms can be picked up at the Chamber of Commerce.
