Ladysmith’s poverty-reduction task group is hosting a free food fair to call attention to the importance of local food access.
The Neighbours Sharing Food Fair, on Saturday, March 25, will give members of the community an opportunity to learn about growing, cooking, preserving and accessing locally grown food.
“We really want to continue to generate connections for anyone who is in need of local, healthy food to know where they can go to access it and feel welcome doing so,” said project coordinator Rosalie Sawrie in a news release. “It’s also important for those who want to share food, skills or resources related to food in the community to attend and learn how they can get involved.”

According to the release, the highlight of the day will be a cooking demonstration of a meal made entirely of ingredients from the Ladysmith Resources Centre Association food bank; the meal cooked in the demo will then be served as a free lunch for attendees.
The fair will also feature a variety of tables with community resources, recipes, nutritional information, demonstrations about growing food and plant and food giveaways from local farmers and food-related businesses.
The poverty-reduction task group leads the CommUnity Together to End Poverty Hw-nuts’-ulwum (as one) poverty reduction strategy which identifies themes and recommends actions to help reduce poverty in Ladysmith and Stz’uminus.
The fair will take place at Ladysmith Secondary School from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
