After submitting a letter endorsing the Nanaimo event centre proposal in December, Nanaimo school district has changed its tune.
In a letter from Scott Saywell, assistant superintendent, dated Dec. 16, the district offered endorsement of the events centre proposal. Among the reasons cited were “the multi-use facility will provide the district with options for our secondary sports academies or the use of recreation and meeting rooms, to name a few.”
However, the district amended its stance Tuesday, stating it didn’t have an opinion or interest in the construction of an events centre in Nanaimo.
“The intent of the initial letter was to be a supportive partner,” Saywell said to the News Bulletin in an e-mail. “In hindsight, the district acknowledges that the letter appeared to take a political view, therefore, the district asked that it be removed from any events centre documents.”
Steve Rae, school board chairman, said he didn’t have a comment about the letter, but the issue has been discussed by the board.
Rae reiterated that the board doesn’t have an opinion on the issue and that a letter has been sent to Mayor Bill McKay stating that.
