Crews started work pouring the concrete at Ladysmith’s new biosolids facility on Thicke Road earlier today.

The new composting site on 2.24 acres in the south end of town will have a covered enclosure for the compost piles as well as bio-filters to mitigate odour and a leachate collection system.

The cost of the building is approximately $1.8 million, which will be offset by a $570,000 grant from the Gas Tax Fund.

The resulting composted material is Class A topsoil used in Ladysmith’s landscaping operations.

Following months of frustration, tensions boiled over earlier this year when residents fed up with the smell coming from the Public Works Yard protested outside the gate on Sixth Avenue.

The town announced a few days later that it had purchased the property at 4142 Thicke Road and has taken steps in the interim to transport its biosolids elsewhere while the new facility is being built.
