Police on Gabriola Island are looking for witnesses to a fatal cycling accident.

According to Gabriola RCMP, the incident happened Saturday when a 25-year-old woman on a bicycle was critically injured when she struck a parked car at the B.C. Ferries terminal parking lot at Descanso Bay on North Road.

In an RCMP press release issued Wednesday, police said it is believed the cyclist was riding west on North Road toward the ferry terminal and failed to negotiate a sharp turn onto Easthom Road, where North Road, which has a steep grade, ends at the ferry terminal.

The woman was flown to Victoria General Hospital, but died of her injuries.

Gabriola RCMP are looking to speak to several witnesses they believe were on scene at the time but have yet to be identified.

Anyone with information about this accident is asked to call Gabriola RCMP detachment at 250-247-8333.
