HARTWIG, Mary Dona Marie.

October 1, 1921 - August 20, 2017

Mary, as she was known to her parents and siblings, was born in Birtle, Manitoba on October 1, 1921. She had three older brothers and two years later her sister Jean was born.

The family moved to Vancouver when Mom and Auntie Jean were quite young. Their grandparents had a homestead in Otter Bay, Pender Island, where Mom and Jean spent their summers.

Mom met Harold in 1940 in Vancouver, and he started calling her Marie.

Harold was a well known soccer player and he really caught her eye. They were married in 1942 the day before Harold was shipped out to Dundurn Saskatchewan during the war.

Together they had two children, David born in March of 1943 and Susan born in November 1946.

In 1952 the family moved to Mahood Falls BC., 50 miles east of 100 Mile House. They built a house on the shore of Roserim Lake. This oasis would be the gathering place for all the family and friends on both sides. Also all of David and Susan’s high school friends visited in the summer. Marie was the cook for all these people, and what a cook she was. Noted for her home made bread, pies and Cariboo pancakes.

They moved to Ladysmith in 1981, and spent many happy years living in the Cassidy Mobile Home Park. When the great-grandchildren started to arrive in 1993 her name affectionately became “GG “.

Marie was predeceased by Harold in 2001 and is survived by David (Jan) Hartwig and Susan (Bryan) Loveless. Grandchildren Brenda (Gregg), Paul (Sandra), Sheryl (Dave), Steven, & Cassandra. 14 Great Grandchildren and a Great Great Grandchild who is due in December, 2017.

Rest in Peace Mom, we will all miss you. I know you are showing Dad Otter Bay now.
