A 15-year old Ladysmith athlete was the B.C. Minor Baseball Association’s Rookie of the Year.

Mercedez Johnson recently accepted the 2022 award in Vancouver.

She played for both the 21U B.C. Selects team at the women’s invitational in St. John’s, Nfld., and the 16U B.C. Selects team at the girls’ invitational in Summerside, P.E.I.

According to the association, she is a “dedicated and skilled player that any coach would want to have as part of her team.”

Johnson, who plays multiple positions in the field, had an important role as the team’s lead-off batter. She ended the tournament with seven stolen bases and a .467 batting average.
