Black Press Extreme Education and Career Fair happening Thursday, Sept. 12

Those who want to make a change for the better had a chance to do so today on the mid Island.

The Black Press Extreme Education and Career Fair was held today at the Nanaimo Curling Centre.

People had a chance to connect with exhibitors from companies, agencies, post-secondary institutions and more and find out about opportunities.

There were dozens of booths set up at the facility, including the Commissionaires, Discovery Community College, and Tilray.

Matt Rende, recruiting officer with the Commissionaires, said the security organization looks for reliable workers and was able to identify good candidates today. He said there are full-time and part-time positions available.

“As well, we’re looking for people who maybe want to move up and learn the trade. We promote from within, so all our guards, if they start at the base, they can become supervisors and schedulers and managers,” Rende said.

Audrey Wilson, career advisor at Discovery Community College, said the post-secondary instution has a range of programs, and a popular one is health care. In addition to nursing intakes twice a year, Wilson said there are courses that can lead to work in the business aspects surrounding health services.

“We really work with communities to really understand the type of career options and career focuses that are going on,” she said.

At Nanaimo-based cannabis company Tilray, there are plenty of career opportunities, some of them being manufacturing, production, quality assurance, lab technician work, clinical research and finance, said Kristina Ramanauskas, talent acquisition manager.

“I think there’s a lot of attraction to the industry,” she said. “People are more aware of the cannabis sector, really looking for new opportunities.”
