A group of quilters are trying to make a difference by providing homemade quilts for the new tenants of a Ladysmith affordable housing project.
The Saltair Quilters and Crafters Group, along with the Cowichan District Heritage Quilters Guild and two Kamloops-based quilters, recently finished their most recent project and provided a load of quilts for the new tenants of the 36-unit Heart on the Hill affordable housing project.
According to a news release from the Ladysmith Resources Centre Association, which spearheaded the housing project, the group, whose motto is “make a difference in the world with your passions,” started the project in May and worked every Tuesday since to deliver the blankets.
“Tenants reacted to the generosity, saying the gesture made them feel special as tenants at Heart on the Hill,” noted the release.

In addition to working on personal projects, the Saltair Quilters and Crafters Group has worked on other collaborative projects in the past, including providing quilts to the Crossroads Pregnancy Centre in Nanaimo and the Covenant House in Vancouver, and they are using recycled fibre scraps to make dog beds for the local SPCA.
The group meets every Tuesday at the Saltair Community Centre from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
