Members of the Ladysmith Eagles and the Eagles Auxiliary fulfilled a wish of their late president this summer help local sports teams know the score.
The organizations donated $50,000 to the Town of Ladysmith to buy and install three electronic scoreboards. Larry Williams, who spearheaded the project, was a great sports enthusiast and enjoyed watching local teams playing on the community fields. The money raised by the Eagles was part of a long-standing involvement of almost three decades with Harbour City Bingo.
At the unveiling of one of the new scoreboards at Aggie Field in July, the No. 2101 Eagles said members were very excited about the scoreboard project because at one time or another they’ve all had family members participating in games on the fields.
Along with the Aggie Field board there is one installed at Holland Creek ballpark. The third scoreboard will be installed at Forrest Field after the completion of upgrades there.
Mayor Aaron Stone, on behalf of town council, thanked the Eagles members for their ongoing commitment to local youth sports.
“Your generous gift will have a lasting legacy in the community and provide a more entertaining experience for spectators and players during events,” the mayor said.
A statement from the town noted that the scoreboards “will greatly benefit local youth and sports organizations, as well as supporting the capacity of our local sports organizations to host games and tournaments.”
The Eagles, following a mandate of ‘people helping people,’ have provided funding to soccer, football, hockey, figure skating, baseball, softball and swimming organizations in and around Ladysmith for many years.
