Love is in the air at Ladysmith Intermediate School where February promises to be a month of fun and fundraising for literacy and numeracy initiatives.
The “I Love Ladysmith Intermediate School” campaign, running from Feb. 5 to 21, aims to raise $30,000 to support the purchase of new library books, novel study sets, classroom literature and other resources that will help students improve their reading levels and comprehension.
The school’s Parent Advisory Council (PAC) has set the stage for success, pledging to match donations up to $15,000. Contributions can be made via cash, cheque or online. The school is also welcoming donations of gently used books to stock the library's shelves.
The fun kicks off with the return of Carnation Grams from Blooms at the 49th. Students can send carnations to friends and teachers or take a bouquet home.
Throughout February, the council will keep the fun going with popcorn sales every Wednesday, a bonus hot lunch from Maya Norte and a loonie drive. Panago Pizza coupons will also be available for sale in March. All proceeds from these activities will directly support literacy and numeracy efforts, replacing worn-out materials and expanding access to books that reflect the interests and passions of students.
Principal Dionte Jelks has made improving literacy and numeracy a top priority at the school and applauds the school's engaged and enthusiastic parent council.
"Our PAC plays a critical role in supporting the success of our students at Ladysmith Intermediate School through their incredible fundraising efforts," said Jelks. "Now, they are supporting us to reach our literacy and numeracy goals by providing resources and opportunities that enrich our classrooms. We are deeply grateful to have such a dedicated and active PAC, whose commitment to our school community makes a lasting difference in the lives of our learners."
Ladysmith Intermediate School, located at 317 French St., has been a community cornerstone since it opened in 1956. Today the school serves approximately 350 students in grades 4 through 7. With the school’s 70th anniversary on the horizon, the Ladysmith Intermediate School community is focusing on creating a lasting legacy of educational materials.
To help stock the library, the parent council is requesting donations of popular books like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Wings of Fire, I Survived, The Bad Guys, Baby-Sitters Club, A Series of Unfortunate Events, Gordon Korman novels, Alan Gratz novels and any general fiction youth novels.
To help spread the love, donations can be coordinated by emailing ladysmithintermediatepac@hotmail.com or calling the school at 250-245-3351. Tax receipts are available upon request for financial contributions.
With a lineup of fun activities and a shared commitment to student success, the Ladysmith Intermediate School community is ready to make this fundraiser one for the books.
