Ladysmith A&W plans community Rod Run for June 4

Cruisin’ the Dub will look a little different this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic

Ladysmith A&W’s famous, Cruisin’ the Dub car shows will look a little different this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Normally, A&W’s cruising season is well underway this time of year. Classic cars regularly congregate in the A&W parking lot on Thursday nights, sometimes accompanied by live-music. With social distancing rules firmly in place, it’s no longer practical to have large gatherings of people like Cruisin’ the Dub.

Ladysmith A&W owner, Jason Kelland decided that although the event cannot proceed as normal, that doesn’t mean cruising has to be cancelled entirely.

“It’s all about having a bit of fun, getting the cars out there, and spreading some love,” Kelland said.

The Rod Run will take place at 6:00 pm on Thursday, June 4. Classic cars will roar down the streets of the Diamond District, Ladysmith, Saltair, and Chemainus along a route that encompasses ‘as many homes as possible’.

The cars will leave from Ladysmith A&W to the Diamond Loop, they will then cruise around Forrest Field, come down Fourth Avenue, up Walkem Road to Brown Drive Park, and drive past the Ladysmith RCMP station. They will then head to Fourth Avenue , down Symonds Street, up 1st Avenue to Davis Road, then head do a loop around the homes of southern Ladysmith. Once completed, they’ll head down Davis to Coronation Mall, and cross the tracks into Saltair. They’ll drive through Saltair to Chemainus, do a loop past homes in Chemainus, then head back along the same path. Kelland said they may head down to Rocky Creek Road on the way back before returning to Ladysmith A&W.

Ladysmith A&W will be raising funds for Food Banks Canada through a GoFundMe page tied to the event. The link can be found online at a&wladysmith.ca/cruisin/. They have a goal of $2,500.
