Ladysmith cleaning pipes

Ladysmith workers are hard at work cleaning out the town’s pipes.Joe Friesenhan, director of public works, said the process is as easy as opening the correct valves and releasing water from fire hydrants. The cleansing, however, can sometimes cause water to become cloudy.Cleaning the pipes takes around three months and is done every year.“A six-inch pipe sits there with water in it, there will be sand particles and stuff like that that will settle out,” said Friesenhan.“If there’s minimal use, there’s more that settles out.” Opening the hydrant increases the flow and clears out much of the settled dirt. The process of clearing the settled dirt can cause some cloudiness.“If the water gets cloudy, all (people) have to do is run their cold tap for a couple of minutes and it’s done.”
