The Lifesaving Society’s WaterWise team and Island Health’s injury prevention Team were at Thetis Lake to provide swimmers and lake-goers tips on remaining safe on the water and during the extra-hot days over the summer.

The group will be visiting eight locations in B.C. throughout the summer to help educate people of all ages on proper safety practices while they are on the water.

"The biggest [tip] is to swim with a buddy," said Georgia, a WaterWise team member. "No matter what age you are, bring a flotation device with you, preferably a [personal flotation device] or a life jacket, and then tell somebody where you're going before you go."

She also said to check the weather before going out and take necessary precautions depending on how hot it is. And if it is a hot day, the water may still be cool so it's best to bring some warm clothes for after.

When going out, the team says to always bring a water bottle, sun screen, and a Transport Canada-approved flotation device.
