A double bill of jazz, fusion and funk groups will wrap up the Jazz at Crofton season on Sunday, June 26.
The south Island fusion group nFuze will perform original compositions from its first CD as well as interpretations of tunes by such artists as Pat Metheny, Billy Cobham, Chick Corea and Weather Report. nFuze is a tight-knit ensemble of musical artists weaving original melodic and grooving jazz/rock/fusion instrumentals-- as well as interpreting great works by Pat Metheny Group & Billy Cobham.
The band features guitarist Dean Wolfe, keyboardist Dee Cooper, bassist Sheldon Bordal, drummer Andy Okell and percussionist/saxophonist Denis Berger. Guitarist Dean Wolfe’s acoustic guitar piece, Fish are Jumping, is part of the sound track to an award-winninh documentary “Nagaland is Changing, But.” This film was awarded the Golden Beaver for best film in institutional category at the 6th National Science Film Festival.
Chafafa, a new Victoria-based quintet with a style that it says teeters among jazz, lounge, Latin and funk, takes over for the second set. They play original compositions and unusual renditions of classics. Fronted by vocalist Nicolette, the band also includes guitarist Jim Gibson, pianist David Brooke, bassist Bill Zikmantel and drummer Eugene Nep.
Sunday’s performance is part of the Jazz at Crofton series, which will resume in September. It runs from 2 to 5 p.m. each Sunday. Musicians are invited to join in a jam session during the last hour.
The pub is at 1534 Joan Ave., a stone’s throw from the Saltspring Island ferry terminal. Admission is $10.

Teens aged 12-18 can also stop by any Vancouver Island Regional Library branch to pick up a sweet new “booklet” with all 55 challenges listed like a “checklist”. The challenges range from making public art with removable googly eyes to building cool crafts out of findable materials outside.
The challenge is designed to give teens something fun to do during the summer, as well as connect teens with their local library and all of the awesome resources available (such as movies, DVDs, magazines, mp3s, comics and audiobooks).
The program runs from June 13 until August 31, when the grand prize winner will be announced.
Sad, late-breaking news...
The Cuban group Novel Voz, which was coming to B.C. for a goodwill tour with Canadian choirs, and featured in Powell River’s Kathaumiuxw festival, and specifically, Ladysmith’s concert Sunday June 26 next week...has not been given Canadian visas, so our concert and the tour has been cancelled.
