Three students were honoured twice as major award recipients during the Chemainus Secondary School awards ceremony Tuesday at the school’s gymnasium.
Hannah Pachet received the Phillips-Lloyd Trophy as Citizen of the Year and also the Principal’s Award.
Of the latter, principal Lori Hryniuk said “this student is so deserving of this award.”
Pachet has been a member of the Student District Advisory Council the last three years, led a student anti-bullying assembly last year and so much more. “She has the ability to be a profound leader in our school,” praised Hryniuk.
Will Ngenda also made a pair of visits to the podium to receive the Stan Piper Sports Service Award and the Staff Plaque for Outstanding Service to the School.
Scorekeeping, timekeeping and volunteering in any way possible to help the athletic department is how Ngenda landed the service award. “Outstanding is how this person always comes through,” enthused vice principal Jennie Hittinger.
“He’s always a leader in the building,” added Nancy Henry in making the service to the school award presentation.
Matt Simpson was honoured twice as well, with the Senior Male Athlete of the Year award and sharing the William Frier School Spirit Plaque with Morgan Bottomley.
Other major award winners included: Mark Harris (Outstanding Effort in Athletics); Samantha Price (Cedric Lonsdale Plaque for most improvement over her time at Chemainus Secondary); Joel Eastwood (S.A. Bricker Trophy for academic effort); Katia Bannister (Junior Female Athlete of the Year); Luther Tidder (Junior Male Athlete of the Year); Hannah DuMez (Senior Female Athlete of the Year); and Cougars’ senior girls volleyball team coach Kelsey Bell (Brady and Betty Bell Award for contribution to athletics).
Certificates and individual athletic team awards were presented to members of each of the school’s seven sports programs - senior boys basketball, senior girls volleyball, junior girls volleyball, track and field, wrestling, senior boys soccer and senior boys volleyball.
Subject awards were also on the agenda for senior and junior students in English, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science, French, Physical Education, Band, Dance, Drama, Home Economics (Foods and Textiles), Metalwork, Woodworking, Computer Technology, Robotics and Yearbook.
The program began with service certificates and merit awards.
“June is always one of those times we celebrate,” said Hryniuk.
“It is amazing these privileges we have to share those accomplishments.”
