A local group is taking a fashionable approach to fighting cancer. On Saturday, May 28, there will be a fashion show and Chinese auction to raise money for this year’s Relay for Life. The show will take place at St. Mary’s Church Hall in Ladysmith at 1 p.m. and tickets are $15 for the show and tea. Jillian Easterbrook, fashion show co-ordinator, said all the money raised is going towards the Spirit of Ladysmith Relay for Life team. The Relay happens this year at the Rotary Bowl in Nanaimo on June 3 and 4. Easterbrook said the two stores taking part in the fashion show are from A to Zebra Fashions and Hagar’s Boutique. “They are fun, lively up-to-the-minute fashions. So it will be a really colourful, exciting event.” The organizers will also be giving away an Experience Ladysmith Gift Basket — the main item for people to purchase tickets for. There will also be scores of other gift baskets and items people can try to claim through a Chinese Auction. Unlike a regular auction, people buy tickets and drop their tickets inside the container next to the item they want. The more tickets, the greater your chance to win it. Easterbrook reminds people to bring cash to the event as there is no bank machine and people will inevitably want to start adding more tickets to their desired items. “It’s really fun, it’s better than a silent auction.” Merchants in Ladysmith and Nanaimo have been very supportive, said Easterbrook. There will be eight models showing off the fashions — five of whom are local women and three who are regular models from Nanaimo. The experienced models, said Easterbrook, help provide confidence and mentorship to the first-time models. “I think that should make everyone feel more at ease.” The models will be separated so that each store has four models.
