Cowichan Field Hockey played host to the 2025 Senior BC Indoor field hockey tournament Jan. 31 through Feb. 2 at the Cowichan Community Centre and the Wildcats, which featured the Goodman sisters of Cowichan field hockey fame, beat UBC White 1-0 in the final on a goal from Victoria's Ali Baggott.
Kelsey, Sarah, and Ella Goodman were joined by their mom Heather, the team manager, Cowichan's Alyson Denis, Sara Lowes, and Grace Paddle, Victoria's Ali Baggott, Maia Lawerence, and Nora Struchtrup, Malin Koetter from Germany, and Christine Shojania from Vancouver.
"The senior indoor tournament always brings high competition and talent to the Cowichan Valley which includes current and past national team members as well as current and past university varsity players," said Heather Goodman. "I personally love this event."
The Wildcats advanced to the playoffs after stumbling out of the gate.
In their first game against UBC White, the team lost 2-1 and then they fell to UVic Blue 4-2 to go winless through pool play. Finding their stride, the team powered ahead to beat Cowichan's other team, the Island team, 3-0 in the quarterfinals, and UVic White 2-1 in the semifinals to reach the final.
"From start to finish, every single player on the Wildcats played an integral role in securing this victory," she added. "Despite having never played together as a team before this tournament, they quickly learned to trust one another, adapting and growing with each game," Heather Goodman said. "It was a true testament to their dedication, as they carried out the team’s strategy. Every match saw them improving as a unit."
Baggot, Paddle, and Kelsey Goodman lead the team in scoring, each with two goals through five games. Ella Goodman, Sara Goodman, and Sara Lowes also scored during the tournament.
Meanwhile, the Island team didn't have the tournament they would have liked, placing sixth of seven teams.
The Island team tied UVic White 1-1 in their opening game on the Friday night and then they beat the Hawks 5-3 in their first game the following morning. In their second game of Saturday, the Island squad tied UBC Blue 3-3 to advance out of pool play and into a quarterfinal contest about the Wildcats. With the Wildcats winning 3-0, the Island team was forced into the consolation bracket, where they beat the Hawks once more, this time 3-1 before falling to UVic Blue 3-2.
The Island team included: Casey Tucker, Amanda Burns, Claire Osmond, Alison Fraser, Stefanie Langkammer, Ashton Aumen, Kristie Sykes, Caitlin Erickson, Ava Smith, Sumeet Aujla, and Diana Larson.
Langkammer was the team's top scorer with three goals in six games while Aumen, Sykes, Smith, and Larson all scored twice. Burns, Fraser, and Erickson all pitched in with a goal apiece.
