A 32-year-old Langford man faces eight charges including assault with a weapon and using a disguise, after a group of teens was attacked Sept. 4 on the Galloping Goose Regional Trail.

Four youths called West Shore RCMP Sept. 4 around 10:20 p.m. reporting a man wearing a balaclava and “carrying an edged weapon” sprayed them with mace, on the path near Atkins Avenue and Westwind Drive in Langford, police said in a news release.

The youths were involved in a brief altercation with the suspect before he ran off. One youth was cut, sustaining serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital. The other youth were treated at the scene. The motive for the attack is not yet known, but police added the victims and suspect are not known to each other.

Shortly before 10:30 p.m., police received a call from a neighbouring home on Kingswood Drive of a man, who matched the suspect description, acting erratically.

Police, including West Shore RCMP Police Dog Services, took a suspect into custody and subsequently seized a can of mace and a knife.

Kai Seppala faces eight charges including assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and using a disguise while committing an offence. He remains in custody with a coming court date set for October.
