Cowichan Folk Guild Coffeehouse serves up rich sounds of Becky Prokova

"I hope audience members leave feeling seen, moved"

When it comes to showcasing talent the Cowichan Folk Guild always has something special brewing, and the month of April is no exception as they serve up the warm sounds of emerging artist Becky Prokova.

"It’s an honour to be part of such a rich folk music tradition," said Prokova. "I’m excited to share an intimate evening of music in a space that values storytelling and connection."

The Cowichan Folk Guild has been bringing the community together through music since the mid-1980s, and coffeehouse host Jack Connolly has been delighting audiences with his own singing and songwriting talents since the age of 12. Prokova, who is originally from Toronto and now lives on Hornby Island, said she was called to Vancouver Island because of its natural beauty, creative spirit, and slower, more intentional way of life, serving as the perfect place to deepen her artistry. She said her relationship with music is timeless.

"Inspiration comes from the depths of my own emotions and experience, allowing myself to sit with them fully and let them shape the music that flows through me," said Prokova. "I’m often in awe of what emerges when I surrender to the process. It feels less like something I create and more like something I channel, as if the songs already exist and I’m simply giving them a voice."

"My favourite part of performing is that moment of connection when a song resonates with someone and creates an unspoken understanding," said Prokova

She hits the stage at the Duncan United Church Hall on April 12. Doors open at 7 p.m., and local talent will take the open stage at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $5 for guild members and $10 for the general public.

"I hope audience members leave feeling seen, moved, and reminded of the beauty in embracing the full spectrum of emotions," said Prokova. "If my music can offer a sense of connection or catharsis, then I’ve done what I set out to do."
