A Ladysmith cartoonist is selling a calendar, which he says guarantees a laugh a day for all of 2022. Marty West compiled his best work after about nine years of cartooning. He said he does not struggle to find inspiration for jokes.

“You just step outside your door and you will see something hilarious within a few minutes,” he said. “It happens all the time — you just have to be looking for humour.”

About 30 per cent of the cartoons were drawn by Indigenous and international partners, but all the jokes they are original ideas from West. “I could probably do a cartoon everyday, I just wouldn’t have time to draw them all,” he said.

West said the main selling point of his art is the humour and the cartoons are just a medium.

“I tried art but I am no good at it,” he said. “It started as stick men in grade one or two and just went from there. Now they are just more advanced stickmen.”

West said he hired help and it took seven months to put the calendar together and format it.

It can be purchased for $20 by contacting West at west_martin@hotmail.com. He said he also hopes to make it available in local stores and online soon.
