Ladysmith country singer/songwriter Ryan McMahon used time during the pandemic to write, record and release music from his home studio. He is set to release a new song One More Fire at the end of the month, along with a music video.

“To me One More Fire represents that yearning to obtain connectivity to the human race around me,” McMahon said. “That feeling in my belly that I had when it was the night before battle of the bands in high school or that notion that tomorrow I’m going into a new city to meet that community and make them sing, laugh, cry or dance or all of it all at the same time.”

McMahon is booked for opening night at SunFest this July. He sees the continued COVID restrictions being lifted with both trepidation and a glimmer of hope as the joy of reconnecting with friends and fans has been given and taken away numerous times over the past two years.

“After years of scratching and clawing and winning and losing and going through a pandemic that put the brakes on us all — to know that the fire to create and perform still remains in me and won’t be extinguished anytime soon is something for me to personally celebrate and share with the world,” he said.

One More Fire was recorded in Vancouver in August 2020 after McMahon’s friend invited him to the studio. Sheldon Zaharko and Aaron Pritchett joined his son Jordan and his musical partner Danielle Marie, together known as Cross Parallel, to add colour to the chorus with their vocal melodies and their perspective on production. The partnership created the blend of genres heard on this new track.

“On recording day, I had just come off a four-night stint opening for Chad Brownlee and I was admittedly a bit groggy after those good times,” McMahon said. “I pulled my van into the friendly confines of the Warehouse Studio in Vancouver and 20 minutes later I was in an isolation booth banging off a guide vocal with these incredible musicians.”

“It was like ‘get down to business,’ which is the best thing for a guy like me in the studio,” Ryan said. “I have found myself getting lost in the tedium during the making of some of my other records and the speed at which this was done kept things spontaneous and fun, which I think you can hear in the final product.”

McMahon is working on recording a full album with his new production team.

He has a show scheduled at the Ladysmith Waterfront Art Gallery on April 22.
