All aboard 'The Train of Life."
It will be a bittersweet last hurrah for Brenda's Brats as they present their 'Train of Life' concert at The HUB at Cowichan Station on April 27 at 3 p.m.
Time flies when you are having fun. Brenda Braatan who has been on the right track as the choir director of Brenda's Brats for the last 30 years is about to move full steam ahead into retirement. Her choir started by chance while organizing the Mill Bay Community League Christmas Variety Show several years ago when, approximately 10 days before the show, she encountered an unexpected cancellation.
Thinking quick on her feet, Braatan called up some of her musical friends who were more than happy to help her put together a few numbers to fill the gap. The experience for all involved was a good one, so they continued to get together.
"It came as a surprise when I realized the choir had been together for 30 years," said Braatan. "Perhaps that number is what made me think it might be time for someone else to input their expertise and ideas to this great choir. It means a lot to me that most members have been in the choir for many years."
Some of the most longstanding of the choir's 25 members include Jan Campbell, who has been singing her heart out since the choir's inception, and accompanist Amy Costello, who became a 'Brat' when she was just a teenager. Another talented member of Brenda's Brats is Jennifer Cleough, who will be singing a solo about life at 17 years for the troupe's final performance under the direction of Braatan.
While it is still to be determined if the name "Brenda's Brats" will still carry on, the choir certainly will under the leadership of Tom Mitchell, who will take the helm this September.
Tickets are $20 and are available from choir members or by calling 250-743-7866, with a limited number sold at the door. Refreshments will be served.
"Music offers us fulfillment as we navigate through the journey of life," said Braatan. "We have shared many fun holidays and events, and have supported each other through life's ups and downs. I think all members would agree that their life has been richer, by sharing their love of music with each other and with other communities. May I suggest that if you are looking for a strong community — join a choir."
