Sunset Cinema is once again going down across the island.
"We are so excited to bring back Sunset Cinema to Duncan again this year," said Allyson Prescesky of Coastal Community Credit Union, which is putting on the screening. "We always have great support for this event, and we look forward to offering a free, fun event for the community."
With free admission, families in Cowichan Valley can treat their little ones to a night under the stars at the Cowichan Valley Sportsplex on July 18 with the adventures of Littlefoot and his friends with the outdoor screening of the 1988 movie The Land Before Time that is sure to be a dino-myte event.
The Land Before Time, which was created by Don Bluth, follows a male Apatosaurus named Littlefoot and his friends Cera (a female Triceratops), Ducky (a female Saurolophus), Petrie (a male Pteranodon), and Spike (a male Stegosaurus). After the five friends discover the Great Valley, their adventures know no bounds. They raise a carnivorous baby male Tyrannosaurus whom they name Chomper, plus manage to survive a drought, a cold snap, and even witness a solar eclipse. Together on their journey these friends end up learning valuable lessons about themselves, life, and teamwork along the way.
The Sunset Cinema series first got started in 2011 when Coastal Community Credit Union first created a standalone event in Parksville. Due to its popularity and overall love of the event, the series was born, adding new locations along the way which included Duncan. Film loving families can also flock down to Nanaimo's Maffeo Sutton Park on July 19, Bob Dailey Stadium in Port Alberni on July 21, and Robert Ostler Park for a screening of Migration, or stroll down to Kite Field at Parksville Community Beach Park on July 20, or Courtenay's Simms Millennium Park on July 22 for a screening of Trolls Band Together.
"Coastal Community has always been a supporter of community events," said Prescesky. "Each year we sponsor hundreds of events throughout the island, and we wanted to develop something that we could lead, and our employees could be a part of. We knew we wanted something anyone could attend and be a part of... We are now known for the events and get asked every spring if we are doing them again."
The outdoor movie magic begins at dusk at all locations so reel in the good times, and don't forget to bring your chairs, blankets and money for some movie watching munchies. All concession proceeds will once again be donated to the Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island, and last year raised around $10,000 for the foundation.
"It is important for us to share that Coastal Community genuinely cares about our island communities," said Prescesky. "These events are one way that we give back to the communities that support our organization. We are grateful that islanders trust us and do business with us. We wouldn’t be able to give back as much as we do without the support of our members and clients."
