A student from Ladysmith was among the winners of the 2021 Royal Canadian Legion poster and literary contest. Emily-Ann Alyward, who is currently studying art at Vancouver Island University, won the black and white poster contest and will go to Ottawa to participate in Remembrance Day ceremonies.
“It still hasn’t really hit me — it is a big thing but it just seems kind of out there. I haven’t registered it much in my mind,” she said, adding she is excited about the opportunity.
Her pencil-sketch poster shows diverse portraits of soilders. “I am passionate about being more outspoken with my art and diversity is quite a big topic and it does need to be touched on more than it is,” she said. She created the poster as part of an optional assignment when she attended Duncan Christian School.
She said she took art lessons at the Ladysmith Waterfront Art Gallery with her grandfather and took art classes in high school, which led her to study art in university.
