Ladysmith Secondary School was locked down briefly on Monday morning because of a student in possession of a replica firearm, according to RCMP.
“There was an issue with a kid with a replica firearm and it has been dealt with accordingly,” said Cpl. Dave Fish with Ladysmith RCMP. “Nobody was ever really in danger.”
He said the call came in at 11:05 a.m. from the vice principal when there was an issue with a student, who turned out to have a replica handgun. RCMP members attended and confiscated the replica.
The student had no prior incidents or disciplinary issues in the past, Fish said, and no charges will be pursued.
“There was a safety concern so we put in place our practised lockdown protocol,” wrote Dave Travers, LSS principal, in an e-mail to the Chronicle. “RCMP were called and senior management were involved and the RCMP gave us assurance that we could take the school out of lockdown. Student safety was our highest concern. LSS practises for such events and we were fully prepared.”
