Ladysmith shows solidarity for Ukrainian citizens

Ladysmith town-owned lighting has been changed to blue and yellow to show support for Ukraine citizens who are being displaced by war. The town will also fly a Ukrainian flag at city hall. Council voted to keep the lighting and flag until May 31, in order to still be able to change lights for Pride Month in June.

Council voted to keep the lighting and flag until May 31, in order to still be able to change lights for Pride Month in June.

“This is not meant to be about the politics between Russia and Ukraine, this is meant to be in support of the everyday Ukrainian citizens that are being sent from their homes based on this really unequal war,” said Mayor Aaron Stone at councils March 1 meeting. “The shock and the horror worldwide of what we have seen has really moved the global community like we have never seen before. I think all levels of government around the world have taken similar measures.”

Council can still change town lighting to accommodate other lighting requests before the decision expires.
