Cowichan Selects earn first win of their soccer season

Div I men, 49ers also nab wins

Div I

Cowichan Axis visited third-ranked Gorge FC on Friday, Oct. 25, working to a 2-1 victory at Hampton Park.

Blaze Roberts and Andres Algarin scored in the 41st and 54th minutes respectively to take a 2-0 lead into the half. Gorge scored late in the contest but it wasn't enough. Fourth place Cowichan plays host to third place Bays United FC on Nov. 1 at 7:30 p.m. at the Sherman Road turf.

Selects

On Saturday, Oct. 26 Cowichan visited Castaways, still seeking their first win of the season. Taya Brubacher led the way with a goal and an assist as Cowichan FC broke their scoring slump on the way to a 3-1 victory. Janet Leblanc and youth call-up Kendra Gibson also scored for the Selects.

LeBlanc's goal was highlight-reel-worthy.

"I am sure she will remember her first with the club for a long time," said head coach Adam Paulson. "The same can be said for Kendra, who is someone we believe will have a long and successful journey with this team in the future. Throughout the game, she showed great work ethic and composure on the ball for a 16 year old."

Cowichan begins a three game home-stand Sunday against Div. 1 team Gorge United, 12 p.m. at Sherman Road.

Masters

The Steelheads played host to Nanaimo United B at the Sherman Road turf on Saturday, Oct. 26 but the guests were anything but polite. Nanaimo unleashed for six goals and a clean sheet in a 6-0 win on the road. The Steelheads will look to rebound at home against SFFC on Nov. 2 at 8 p.m.

The 49ers visited the Prospect Lake Lakers on Oct. 26 and came away with a 3-0 victory. All three goals came in the first half with a penalty kick from Michael Carrol opening the scoring at the 13-minute mark. Matthew James and Jake Byrne scored in the 30th and 33rd minutes to seal the victory.

On Nov. 9 Vic West visits the Sherman Road turf for a 6 p.m. match-up with the 49ers.

O30 Women

The Cougars played Sunday, Oct. 27 at the Sherman Road turf when they met Vic West. The result wasn't what they'd hoped for as the team suffered a 2-0 loss. Up next for the Cougars is a Nov. 2 match against Nanaimo United FC at the Merle Logan turf.

Div. III

The Oak played to a 2-2 draw with SFFC GBE on Saturday, Oct. 26 at home. Troy Chau and Alexander Smith had Cowichan's goals. Oak FC plays on the road against Vantreights on Nov. 2.

Div. III Women

The Storm played away against the Sannich Fusion on Sunday, Oct. 27, losing 3-1 in a hard-fought battle. Sydney Brownlow was the woman of the match for working to slow the Fusion's offensive surge.

"It just wasn't our afternoon," said the team's Instagram page. "This just makes us even more hungry for next week."

The Cougars play Nov. 2 at home against Ladysmith's Mid Isle FC. Kickoff is 6 p.m.

Div. V

It wasn't the result they wanted on Friday, Oct. 25 when Cowichan FC visited Peninsula FC. Everett Piper scored Cowichan's lone goal in a 2-1 loss.

SFFC visits Cowichan at the Sherman Road turf on Nov. 2 at 4 p.m.
