Two sport athlete to compete overseas

The Cowichan Thunder Jr. B team's Addison Urquhart has been selected by the Canadian Lacrosse League to represent Canada at International Indoor Junior Lacrosse’s Commonwealth Cup in Melbourne, Australia in Feb. 11-22, 2025. He was selected in the first round of invitations that went out on Nov. 1.

Urquhart was a 2023-24 PNWJLL first-team all-star, finishing his rookie season with the Thunder  as the top scoring rookie in the league and the player with the most goals and power play goals league-wide. 

In addition to lacrosse, Urquhart is an accomplished hockey defenceman who attended the Pacific Coast Hockey Academy for two years before joining the VIJHL's Kerry Park Islanders for the 2024-25 season. 

Gilbert inducted into B.C. Soccer Hall of Fame

Former Cowichan Secondary Thunderbird Nick Gilbert will be inducted into the B.C. Soccer Hall of Fame as a player. 

Born and raised in Duncan, Gilbert, now 58, played at the silver level in youth soccer here before starting his move up the ranks. He went on to play for leading Victoria teams for roughly 20 years and even played professionally in the Canadian Soccer League from 1987 to 1993.

Representing Canada at the youth level eight times, Gilbert was a member of the silver-medal winning Canadian U-20 team at the 1984 CONCACAF U-20 tournament in Trinidad & Tobago.

Gilbert earned 12 Caps with the Canadian men's national team between 1988 and 1992, with seven coming as a starter. Noteworthy tournaments in which he participated include the 1990 Three Nations Cup, the 1991 North American Nations Cup and the 1991 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Still involved in the game, Gilbert has been technical director with the Juan de Fuca youth club for the last decade.

Kerry Park Minor Hockey has two more champions.

The Kerry Park Minor Hockey Association's U18A Islanders are gold medallists after a successful Cloverdale Memorial Tournament over the long weekend. Back at home, their U15A counterparts won their Remembrance Day Classic at the local rink, beating the Alberni Valley Gendogs in the final. 

Meanwhile, the U15C team narrowly missed out on the gold medal game in the Cowichan Valley Minor Hockey tournament.

Capitals minor hockey teams find gold over long weekend

The Cowichan Valley Capitals minor hockey program's U18-C1 team brought gold medals home from the Campbell River Minor Hockey U18 recreational tournament over the Remembrance Day long weekend.

They weren't the only Capitals squad to win a title over the weekend. 

The U13-T3 Capitals travelled to Tacoma for the SeaTac Veterans Cup 12U-A1 tournament and earned yet another championship title for the association. 

And finally, the U15-C1 Capitals won their own tournament to bring Cowichan's gold medal count to three in one weekend.

B.C. bronze at U18 nationals

Shawnigan Lake School student athletes Taya Lonsdale, of Langley, and defender Cassandra Kehler, of Shawnigan Lake earned bronze with Team B.C. at the 2024 Women's U18 Championship in hockey Nov. 3-9 in Quispamsis, NB.

Lonsdale was among B.C.'s top scorers with five points (2g, 3a), including one goal in the bronze-medal game. 

Their Shawnigan Lake teammate, forward Zoe Cramer, dressed for Team Manitoba, and ultimately placed seventh overall.

Hall scores five in Mariners' first loss

Cowichan Secondary grad Mackenzie Hall scored five points in 20 minutes of play during the Vancouver Island University Mariners' first loss of the season Nov. 9. The six-foot forward is in her fourth year with the team and is competing in her final season as she's set to graduate in 2025.

Brentwood senior boys ranked 5th in basketball pre-season

The Brentwood College School senior boys basketball team has been ranked fifth in the B.C. High School Boys Basketball Association's 'AA" pre-season rankings.

The division rankings were compiled by Lyle Dhur of Sportvictoria.com.

North Vancouver's Collingwood Cavaliers are the No. 1 seed overall to begin the season, with Pacific Academy of Surrey ranked second.

Last season the Brentwood boys hosted won the senior boys’ 'AA' Island Championship in February to advance to the provincials in March. There, they made it to the gold medal game but were defeated 77-69 by Collingwood. 

Cowichan Valley Wrestling club member makes USports debut

Cowichan Valley Wrestling club's Jack Pye has made his debut with the University of Calgary Dinos. Pye earned fifth place in the men's 125kg group at Dinos Invitational on Oct. 19. 

He went on to wrestle in the Huskie Open at the University of Saskatchewan on Nov. 30.
