The Duncan Christian School Chargers senior boys basketball team won Ucluelet Secondary School's On The Edge Sr. Boys Basketball Tournament in early December.
On the road to the Championship, the team strongly defeated Cedar Secondary and the Ucluelet Juniors. They then tipped-off against the host senior Ucluelet team and after a slow start the team worked itself back into the game.
"In overtime we took the lead for good to secure the win," said DCS athletic director Tom Veenstra.
Player of the Game honours were earned by Grayson Dunn, River Lewis and Luke Morrison over the course of the tournament. Dunn was selected as the Tournament MVP.
The Chargers were ranked No. 1 in the 'A' boys basketball rankings on the Island and No. 10 in the province headed into the B.C. Christian Senior Boys Basketball Championship Jan. 10-11. St. John's Shawnigan was ranked No. 8 in the same category.
In the AA division, Brentwood College is ranked first on the Island and sixth in the province, while Shawnigan Lake School (sixth) and Ladysmith (eighth) also made the Island rankings.
There are no Cowichan-based schools in the AAA division but Quw'utsun Secondary is ranked ninth in the Island's AAAA division.
Meanwhile, the DCS senior girls Chargers earned bronze a couple of weeks ago when they hosted their annual Welcome Back tournament. Campbell River's Carihi won the event, followed by Qwu'utsun Secondary. Queen Margaret's School placed seventh.
Quw'utsun's tournament started with a 41-27 victory over QMS and a 67-23 blowout over St. Andrew's followed to send them to the final. Carihi ended up taking the win 43-36.
DCS's senior girls began the event with a convincing 55-33 win over Glenlyon Norfolk School. Violette Muller was the Player of the Game.
"In the semi-final, we gained valuable experience as we narrowly lost to the tournament champion Carihi by one point," Veenstra said.
Adessa Fitzpatrick was the Player of the Game.
In the bronze medal game the Chargers defeated St. Andrew's of Victoria 68-37 with Player of the Game Natalie Scholefield leading the way.
In addition to snagging the bronze, the Chargers' Violette Muller was selected to the Tournament All-star team.
The DCS girls are an honourable mention on the most recent 'A' senior girls provincial high school basketball rankings.
This weekend DCS is hosting the B.C. Christian Jr. Girls Basketball Championship.
On Jan. 17-18 the school will host the B.C. Christian Senior Girls Basketball Div 2 Championship.
