Sports Shorts: Accolades, team changes, and rivalry games

News and notes from Cowichan's sports community

College star earns college accolade

Cowichan Bay's own Grace Haugen has earned Big Sky Conference Player of the Week honours in NCAA Div. 1 women's tennis. Haugen, now a senior at the University of Montana, is undefeated, including recent wins over Colorado State and Air Force in both singles and doubles.

It's the third time in her university career she's won the weekly honour.

Haugen's last loss was April 13, 2024.

"Her level of play has been impressive — how she's approaching things mentally and working through some challenging situations," said her head coach Steve Ascher. "If you're a fan and you get to see her play, it's been a joy to watch. She finished last season very strong and won her match down at the conference championship in Phoenix, but she's taken it to a whole other level. Maybe two or three levels."

Jenn Jackson joins Orbea

World Class mountain biker Jennifer Jackson has left Liv Racing and joined Orbea Fox Factory team for the season, joining former rival Rebecca Henderson of Australia. Both Jackson and Henderson are national XCO champions. Jackson also currently holds the XCC (short course) and XCM (marathon).

"Capable of top ten finishes at World Cups, we can’t wait to see what Jennifer can achieve this year," said the team.

Private School hockey teams go head to head

The Brentwood College senior boys and girls hockey teams faced Shawnigan Lake School's development teams on Jan. 25 in showcase games at Kerry Park Arena to help mark the 50th anniversary of Brentwood’s ice hockey programs.

The Brentwood boys won 2-1 over Shawnigan Lake while the BCS girls were also victorious.

"This year Shawnigan has strong development squad teams of both genders, including 38 girls, many of whom had never played ice hockey before coming to Shawnigan but wanted to experience Canada’s most-recognized sport for themselves," said a Shawnigan Lake School Facebook post.
