The Kerry Park Islanders added two more to the win column this past weekend, cementing themselves in firmly as one of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League's top teams.
Up first was a Friday night visit to the Lake Cowichan Kraken's den at the Cowichan Lake Arena for a cross-valley battle.
Neither team was able to crack the others' defence in the first period but it took all of 59 seconds for the Islanders to break open the scoring in the second.
Bode Pearson scored his second with the Isles, with assists from his brother, Jobey Pearson, and Brody Lindal to give the Isles a 1-0 lead.
The Isles made it 2-0 when Jobey Pearson potted a power-play marker from Carson Brown just past the 14-minute mark of the second. Jacob Morrison earned the second assist.
The power-play was also clicking for the Kraken as Luke Bennett converted a Benjamin Bertrand pass when the Kraken had an extra man, pulling Lake Cowichan to within one goal by the second intermission.
Special teams played a role in the third period, too, as Lindal added Kerry Park's third goal of the night from Colby Robinson and Matson Waring with the man-advantage.
Robinson added the game's final tally from Matson Waring to power Kerry Park to a 4-1 win.
Carter Puska stopped 36 of 37 shots on goal to score the win for the visiting team.
The following night at home, the Westshore Wolves were in town and tried their hand at besting the Isles. The Wolves out-shot Kerry Park 40-35 but in the end it didn't matter as the Isles went on to win 5-3.
Kerry Park has scored the game's first five goals, amassing a 5-0 lead before Westshore got one back midway through the second period.
A goal in the last 90 seconds of the second and one midway through the third made a game of it but the Wolves ran out of time and energy to continue pushing.
"Westshore is a really good team and we were tied with them in points going into that last game," Ebner said. "They capitalized on a couple of mistakes we made. The thing about this league is teams play to last buzzer no one goes away because they are down. It was a great game and we are grateful to come away with two points."
Still the league's top scorer, Brown netted his 33rd goal of the season, while Lindal, the league's third-highest scorer also potted a single. Kyler Smith added a pair while Jobey Pearson scored his second in as many nights for the Isles to increase his season total to 19.
Ethan Barron played the full 60 minutes between the pipes for the Kerry Park, stopping 37 of 40 shots on goal to earn the win.
"We are playing really good hockey right now and it’s really showing," Ebner said. "We have put a lot of focus in certain areas and we are seeing great results."
Ebner said there is no added pressure to being near the top of the league's standings and the team plans to keep plugging along.
"We take things one game at a time and as long as we stick to our game plan and play responsible we know we have a chance every game," he said.
