Advance voting planned leading up to Nanaimo-Ladysmith school trustee byelection

Voters will have ample opportunity to cast their ballots in a Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools trustee byelection slated for January.

A seat at the school board table was vacated by former trustee Lisa Marie Barron following her successful bid to become Nanaimo-Ladysmith’s elected federal representative.

Naomi Bailey and Steve Rae have put their names forward as byelection candidates.

General voting will be held Jan. 15, but early voting will take place Jan. 4 from 3-7 p.m.at Gabriola Elementary and Jan. 5 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the school district administration centre on Wakesiah Avenue. On Jan. 6, voting will be held at Chase River Elementary from 3-7 p.m.

The district administration centre will again be the site of early voting Jan. 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Jan. 8 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

More advance voting will take place Jan. 11 at Seaview Elementary from 3-7 p.m., Jan. 12 at Ladysmith Primary from 3-7 p.m., Jan. 13 at Gabriola Elementary from 3-7 p.m. and Jan. 14 at the administration centre from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

On general voting day Jan. 15, votes can be cast at Dover Bay, Nanaimo District, Cedar and Ladysmith secondary school gyms from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

People can cast a ballot if they are Canadian citizens, 18 years or over on voting day and have resided in school district boundaries for at least 30 days. Two pieces of identification, one with a signature, will be required.

The byelection can be postponed by Mark Walsh, chief election officer, to Jan. 22 in an event such as extreme weather, however that announcement must be made by Jan. 14 at 8 p.m.
