Car fire destroys vehicle in Chemainus

Traffic rerouted for a short time at the Henry Road roundabout

Flames poured from a vehicle on Chemainus Road Thursday morning, as Chemainus Fire Department members arrived at the scene shortly after 7:30.

“It was a total write-off,” said department member Andy Beam. “It was fully involved when we got there.”

The driver of the vehicle, travelling in the southbound lane of Chemainus Road between Yew Street and Howe Road, managed to get out safely before the flames intensified.

Chemainus Fire Department had two trucks on the scene. Due to the location, traffic had to be rerouted at the roundabout at Henry Road with the road blocked in both directions.

There was an early erroneous report on social media that the incident had occurred at the roundabout, but Beam confirmed that was the detour point.

The fire was so intense that Beam noted there was a burn mark left behind on the pavement.

The incident attracted considerable attention from the public. “There was lots of people there, a lot of bystanders,” Beam pointed out.

Robert Millard who provided photos and video to the Citizen praised the efforts of the Chemainus Fire Department.

The exact cause of the fire is not known.
