Ladysmith children are already starting to show love for their town.

Children from the Strong Start program at Ladysmith Primary School took to the downtown this past Thursday, Feb. 2, for an ‘art bombing’ project done in partnership with the Ladysmith and District Arts Council.

Arts council president Kathy Holmes had the idea to involve various community groups in spur-of-the-moment exhibits of various types of art.

The children from the primary school each had their own heart for Valentine’s Day. Volunteer Steen Hjort cut out all the hearts from maple and the children got to paint and decorate the hearts and then sign them.

“There are 337 hearts strung together, one for each student at the local primary school. Once it’s month end, each student can take their heart home as a memento,” Holmes said.

The initiative was sponsored by Amanda Jacobson, mortgage advisor in Ladysmith. The art bombing, since starting five years ago, has been meant to spread the message of love.

“I love this community and all that is in it,” Holmes said, “so it makes sense that we can do things like this and hopefully the message catches on.”

In addition to the hearts in the trees, students from the Stz’uminus First Nation primary and community school have written 86 poems on the theme of love and they are on display in the front window of the Royal LePage office at First Avenue and Roberts Street.
