Crews are working overnight on a water main replacement project on High Street.

Work commenced last week on the replacement of a portion of old water main on High Street between the Trans-Canada Highway and First Avenue, as the old line was cast iron and was becoming plugged as it reached the end of its life.

The work is being conducted from 6 p.m.-6 a.m. to help minimize the disturbance to local residents and businesses in the area, and will be ongoing for about a month and a half, with a slowdown in a couple of weeks to allow for the testing of the line.

According to town staff, the project was awarded to Milestone Equipment Contracting out of Nanaimo after a tendering process. The cost of the project is $246,000.

The contractor has been given the use of town property on Buller Street to store gravel and material for the job and limit the amount of space that would be shut down on High Street.

“We’re ahead of schedule on the job,” said Bradley Olson, site foreman for Milestone. “The first couple of days we had more pipe laid down than what we anticipated, but [then] we hit an unknown one-inch waterline so that has caused a bit of a delay.”

The water main project is one of three large-scale infrastructure projects happening in Ladysmith right now, as upgrades to Transfer Beach continue, as well as the re-construction of three blocks of Fourth Avenue including the underground services.
