A motorist has been charged after a two-vehicle crash on the Trans-Canada Highway north of Ladysmith early Wednesday night that left one person injured.

The accident occurred just after 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of the highway and Brenton Page Road.

North Oyster Fire Department, Ladysmith RCMP and BC Ambulance all responded to the scene.

Ladysmith RCMP Const. Mason Dirnback said the driver of the white Volkswagen Jetta was turning left and allegedly didn’t give adequate time and distance.

The vehicle was struck by a black Volkswagen Golf heading northbound on the highway.

“Fortunately the driver of the black Volkswagen had the presence of mind to swerve to avoid the passenger side door. It could have been worse,” Dirnback said.

Paramedics transported the passenger travelling in the Jetta to hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the vehicle was charged by RCMP with failing to yield on a left turn.

Both cars sustained extensive damage and had to be towed from the scene.

North Oyster firefighters helped with directing traffic in the area as the highway was briefly reduced to a single lane near the accident scene.

The intersection was fully cleared by 6:30 p.m.
