ELECTION 2014: CVRD contest holds host of hopefuls and referendum questions

Big races in Shawnigan Lake, and Cowichan Station-Sahtlam-Glenora, could mean new faces at the Cowichan Valley Regional District board table after the Nov. 15 election.

Those tight south-end fights contrast to three candidates, including two incumbents, winning by acclamation in north and west areas.

Those acclaimed include incumbent Ian Morrison in Cowichan Lake South-Skutz Falls (Area F); incumbent Mary Marcotte in North Oyster-Diamond (Area H); and former CVRD director Klaus Kuhn in Youbou-Meade Creek (Area I).

Six folks are on the election bill to fill Shawnigan Lake (Area B) seat being vacated by current director Bruce Fraser.

That contest will see voters choose between Robert Arndt, Brent Beach, Sonia Furstenau, Larry Jorginson, Lois Morrow and Bill Savage.

Perhaps the most crucial issue facing the area is a provincial contaminated soil-treatment permit being appealed by lake residents, and CVRD taxpayers.

Farther north in Cowichan Station-Sahtlam-Glenora, (Area E) long-time director Loren Duncan is lacing up against challengers Nathan Barker, Dan Ferguson, Janice Macalister, and Alison Nicholson.

Contests are booked in other Cowichan regional areas, where the looming election holds new four-year terms, replacing B.C.'s former three-years of service.

Kerry Davis faces incumbent Mike Walker in Mill Bay-Malahat (Area A); Matteus Clement duals Dara Quast in Cobble Hill (Area C), where long-time director Gerry Giles is retiring; and Currie Ellis is challenging incumbent director Lori Iannidinardo in Cowichan Bay (Area D).

Finally, Saltair-Gulf Islands (Area G) sees incumbent Mel Dorey row against Tom Hockin, and John Sherry.
