Fire destroys fifth-wheel home

Neighbour says couple escaped without injury, but lost everything in blaze

A Cassidy man says his neighbours safely escaped a fire early this morning, but lost their dog and all their possessions in the process.

Seniors Reg and Judy Beaubien lived in their fifth-wheel at 1591 Carden Road until driven out by a fire that broke out about 2:30 a.m.

Ray Vatcher, the Beaubien's neighbour for the past four years at the property off Hallberg Road, said he awoke to the sound of the fire trucks.

"I looked out the window and the flames were shooting up 30 to 40 feet," he said. "They lost absolutely everything. The only thing was her wallet. She had left it in the car."

According to Vatcher, the couple was checked out in the ambulance and found to be alright. The Regional District of Nanaimo's emergency social services program has put them up in a hotel and they are insured.

The cause of the fire is unknown at the point. The North Oyster Volunteer Fire Department was not immediately available for comment.
