UPDATE: Firefighters called to second bush fire south of Nanaimo

Firefighters got a bush fire under control just outside Nanaimo on Sunday, but another has been sparked.

According to the B.C. Wildfire Service website, Coastal Fire Centre crews were fighting a 0.3-hectare fire near the Blackjack Forest Service Road southwest of Nanaimo in the early-morning hours Monday.

Coastal Fire Centre firefighters dealt with a 0.4-hectare bush fire west of Extension Road on Sunday.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue tweeted just before 6 p.m. about a “bush fire outside of city. Coastal onscene w/ heli. Fire is under control, NFR crews standing by.”

Extension Fire Department tweeted shortly after that “we have provided notice to forestry should they require assistance to the forest fire on our border near Virostko Road, we stand ready!”
