Two people taken to hospital after collision at Hammond Bay and Rutherford roads Friday, Sept. 23

A head-on crash on Hammond Bay Road at the bottom of Rutherford hill has resulted in injuries and auto wrecks.

Emergency crews were called to the intersection of Hammond Bay and Rutherford roads a little after 9 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 23, after a two-vehicle collision.

Firefighters needed to use the Jaws of Life to extricate a female driver from one of the vehicles and both she and the male driver of the other vehicle were transported to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital with unknown but non-life-threatening injuries.

There were 14 crashes at that intersection in 2021, according to ICBC statistics, and 50 crashes over the five-year period from 2017-2021.
