Garbage truck fire snarls Malahat traffic

Fire started near Malahat Gas on the Trans-Canada Highway

Emergency crews have extinguished the garbage truck on fire near Malahat Gas.

The truck caught fire roughly 20 metres from the gas station.

The siding of a nearby structure also caught fire but crews were able to contain the blaze before it spread. Fire spread to the tree beside the garbage truck, but it was quickly put out.

The driver of the truck was able to safely exit the vehicle and the couple that rents the house got out and no one was injured.

Traffic is no longer being directed, but it is still slow in both directions on the Trans-Canada Highway.
