A partial culvert washout occurred overnight as the town received over two inches of rain since midnight.

“In the unlikely event of a complete road closure, access will be provided off the Timberwest Logging Road Main via 4th Avenue at Forrest Field,” according to a public notice issued by the town.

“The Timberwest Logging Road Main can be accessed through the Diamond Improvement District off of the north end of the Christie Road.”

Heavy rainfall last November forced the closure of the same area of the Rocky Creek Dip after the sidewalk and a part of the roadbed collapsed.

Director of infrastructure Geoff Goodall told the Chronicle at the time that additional riprap was added to fotify the embankment above the culvert.

Rocky Creek was running so high on Monday morning that the top of the culvert was not even visible.

A replacement of the drainage structure is included in the 2018 budget at a cost of $750,000 with money coming from the gas tax and infrastructure reserve.

The Municipality of North Cowichan also closed Chemainus Road at Crofton Road on Monday due to localized flooding.
